Who We Are

At Foxfire Film Festival, we believe in the power of stories to connect people, spark creativity, and celebrate community. We are a volunteer-driven festival founded by filmmakers, and community members who share a passion for storytelling and a love for Wheeling. Our mission is to showcase diverse voices — from emerging student filmmakers to award-winning documentarians — and to create a welcoming space where stories from all walks of life can be shared, heard, and celebrated. Rooted in the heart of Appalachia, Foxfire is more than just a film festival — it’s a gathering place for ideas, creativity, and conversations that matter.

How Foxfire Came to Be

The Foxfire Film Festival began with a vision to create a meaningful documentary festival in Wheeling, inspired by the power of place and community experienced at film festivals nationwide. Recognizing Wheeling’s vibrant downtown, welcoming community, and convenient accessibility, festival co-founder Molly Hughes, a feature film designer, partnered with Oglebay Institute’s Towngate Theatre, whose shared enthusiasm for documentary storytelling made them an ideal collaborator. This partnership grew with the addition of independent film producer Kristin Seibert, who had independently envisioned establishing a festival in

Wheeling. Together, Molly and Kristin drew upon their extensive filmmaking experience to launch the Foxfire Film Festival, dedicated to connecting audiences through powerful stories that reflect regional, national, and international experiences, emphasizing the universal threads that link us all. Through its short film competition, Foxfire specifically supports local youth by offering mentoring opportunities and financial awards, empowering high school and college students to explore filmmaking careers and share their unique voices and stories.
